During her studies in Film Production at Concordia University, Melanie Garcia began experimenting with large-scale digital collage. Eventually moving to analog, mixed-media collage, her paper-based works explore “the unconscious and liminal spaces, the minutiae of human interactions, and the connection of the body to the environment and the unknown.” Doors and passageways contrast abstracted vistas and disembodied limbs in a surreal depiction of a place that is between somewhere and nowhere. She also explains that the figures represent “characters that can be interpreted as seekers on a path,” following the route or perhaps guiding others along the way.
