after the winter

Adam Farcus

Environmentalist and sustainability scholar Glenn A. Albrecht coined the term psychterratic to describe the emotional and mental state of people in relationship to the earth, especially in terms of the distress caused by the gradual loss of one’s home and surrounding environment. The solace we typically associated with these places is replaced by a sense of anxiety and stress.

Tampa, Florida-based artist Adam Farcus explores the polarized emotional ramifications and responses to climate change and social injustice, often incorporating language or signs and a purposeful ambiguity.

In their 18-minute film after the winter, Farcus views central Illinois through the lens of change, juxtaposing interviews, local landscapes, chance encounters, abstraction, a score-based collaborative soundtrack, and a “poetically playful” aesthetic. “In this piece, doubt for our climate future is weighed against questions about hope and declarations of faith,” Farcus says. “This piece was created through interactions, collaborations, and grace among people in central Illinois.”
